Avilla – William D. “Del” Weaver, 85, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Avilla, passed away with family at his side on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Parkview Randallia Hospital. He was born on April 2, 1939, in Muncie, being raised by Bristel C. and Edna (McCreery) Weaver. Del, as he was known by many, served his country in the US Army from 1957 until 1963, based mostly in Germany. He had many hobbies and pursued them with passion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, reading, playing chess, and visiting with friends who often stopped to say hello. Woodworking was another hobby that Del enjoyed, making pieces of furniture and a grandfather clock. Del was a lifelong student, being self-taught in many subjects, received certifications in plumbing and HVAC, and was a member of Mensa. He was the owner and operator of Weaver Bait Farm in Avilla. This entrepreneurial spirit led him to learning many aspects of biology and chemistry – furthering his education and love of learning.
On May 18, 1990, in Manistee, Michigan, he married Lorraine Traxler. She survives in Fort Wayne. Also surviving are step-children, Greg (Lisa) Shirk of Fort Wayne, Brenda (Grant) Morris of Jupiter, FL, and Rhonda (Matt) Shotts of Fort Wayne. Also surviving are grandchildren, Robin (Travis) Negron, Wendy Weaver, Dusty Weaver, Nicole Streb, Jared (Grace) Shirk, Jake Shirk, Alyse Penninger, Trey Penninger, Evan Shotts, and Andrew Shotts; and 5 great grandchildren. Del was preceded in death by his parents, and sons, Michael Weaver, Walter Weaver, and Max Weaver.
In honoring Del’s wishes, there will be no services. Contributions in his memory may be directed to American Brain Foundation (www.americanbrainfoundation.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
