Victoria Barbara “Vicki” Lindsey, 80, of Albion, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Orchard Pointe Health Campus in Kendallville, Indiana. Born on June 27, 1944, in Kendallville to Russell and Martha (Gandy) Lindsey, Vicki lived a life filled with curiosity, conversation, and an unwavering love for people. She graduated from Albion Jefferson High School in 1963 before earning her degree in American & World History from Manchester College in 1967. She later obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University.
For over 32 years, Vicki taught at Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, Michigan, where she captivated her students with her storytelling and passion for history. She had a gift for making the past come alive, and her enthusiasm left a lasting impression on generations of students. After retiring from teaching in 2000, she moved to Dunedin, Florida, to be close to her mother and brother. Following their passing, she returned to Albion in 2013 to be with her sister.
Vicki had a way with words, whether she was sharing a good book, spinning a story, or engaging in long conversations with friends and strangers alike. She never met a person she couldn’t talk to, and her warmth and humor made everyone feel welcome. But beyond her quick wit and sharp mind, Vicki had a heart as big as the world. She was incredibly generous, always willing to lend a hand, offer support, or give the shirt off her back to someone in need. She believed in taking care of others, whether it was through a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or simply being there when someone needed her most.
She was also an animal lover, especially when it came to her cat Nermal, who was her cherished companion over the years. Vicki was a proud member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, joining through her brother, who was a veteran and member of the VFW. It was an organization deeply important to them both, and she took great pride in supporting veterans and their families.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Jil Leatherman of Albion; nephews Scott (Mindy) Leatherman of Columbia City and Dustin Leatherman of Albion; niece Lindsey (Salam) Lazkani of Walnut Creek, California; and her cherished great-niece and great-nephews, Colby Leatherman, Evan Leatherman, J. Laythan Lazkani, and Cecelia Lazkani.
Also surviving is Marcia Maria Batista Costa Machado of Goiania, Brazil, an exchange student whom Vicki loved as a daughter and welcomed into her heart and home. In addition, Vicki adored Marcia’s children, Gabriella (Fred) Machado Costa Lisboa and Kroner Machado Costa, whom she cherished as grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Martha; her brother, Thomas Lindsey; and her grandparents, Ora and Victoria Gandy and Oscar and Elma Lindsey.
Vicki will be remembered for her wit, her wisdom, and the way she made every conversation feel like an adventure. But above all, she will be remembered for her generous heart—a heart that gave without hesitation and loved without limits. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and the many lives she touched.
“And through it all, it is well. And it is well with my soul.”
A graveside service will be 11am, Friday, June 27, at Christian Chapel Cemetery, US 33 Merriam. Pastor Nikki Marker will officiate.
Donations in Victoria’s memory may be made to the ASPCA, VFW, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
