Sue Ann Ley, also known as Suzy or Sue Sue, was born October 25, 1944, in Joplin, MO, and passed away December 8, 2023, in Auburn, IN, from Alzheimer’s disease. She graduated from Texas Women’s University with a degree in Social Work and immediately went to work for the Red Cross in Dallas. She later transferred to the National Red Cross and was assigned to William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso. From there she was sent to the 24th Evac Hospital in Long Binh, Vietnam, where she met her future husband, Larry Ley. They were married in July 1969 in Garland, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Avilla, IN. Larry preceded her in death.
Sue Ann was always the life of any gathering, be it playing cards with a few friends or a large Ley family gathering. She loved wearing T-shirts with funny sayings and bragged that she had the best-read chest in Hideaway. Another love was gardening. She actually became a Master Gardener along with three very special friends from Hideaway. Country music was another passion. She played only “Willie’s Roadhouse” in the car and sang every word right along with whoever was singing. She loved being part of a trio that entertained in retirement and nursing homes around Hideaway. Sue Ann leaves behind many relatives and dear friends who will miss her love of life, her joyful laugh, and that grin of a smile. There was never a dull moment around Sue Ann, Suzy, or Sue Sue, whatever you called her. Sue Ann was a very unique and caring individual who will be greatly missed by many.
Survivors include her sister, Lila (John) Driver; and her Ley family in-laws, Phil (Lisa) Ley, of Avilla, Leo (Linda) Ley, of Naperville, Illinois, Vince Ley, of Williamsburg, Kansas, Robert (Kim) Ley, of Avilla, Anthony (Regina) Ley, of Rome City and Urban (Tina) Ley, of Avilla; sister, Rita (Carl Ramcke) Eagleson, of Naperville, and Carla Ley of Avilla.
