Shelvia "Jake" Short

Kendallville – Shelvia Jean “Jake” Short, 88, of Kendallville, passed away at her home on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.  She was born on Feb 17, 1937, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Arnold and Velvia Mae (Younce) Salisbury.

She loved reading and spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren & great grandchildren.  She also discovered a love going on cruises with her sister.  Jake retired from Shepherd of the Hill Nursing Home in 1995.  On July 15, 1953, in Hindman, Kentucky, she married Vertis “Doug” Short.  He preceded her in death on May 1, 2006.

Survivors include her son, Wade (Kathy) Short of Kendallville; grandchildren, Deborah (Shannon) Woods and Corey (Andria) Short both of Kendallville; great grandchildren, Faith Borrero, Kaitlin Borrero, Douglas Short, Logan Short, Taylor Short, and Riley Short.  Also surviving are brothers, Hoie “Bud” (Cosbie) Salisbury of Avilla, Gordon (Allene) Salisbury of Kendallville, and Dean (Barb) Salisbury of Fayette, TN; and sisters, Pelinnia (Allen) Dirrim of Scottsboro, AL, and Flora (Rick) Borger of Kendallville.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond Salisbury and Paul “Pete” Salisbury; and sisters, Vernice McDaniels, Ora Wicker; and infant sister, Clara Salisbury.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2PM on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Bethel Christian Baptist Church, 2838 E. US 6, Kendallville with an hour of visitation prior to the service.  Pastor Shawn Shepherd will officiate.  Burial will be at a later date at Orange Township Cemetery near Brimfield.
