AVILLA — Max M. Whonsetler, 88, of Avilla, Indiana, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Sacred Heart Village in Avilla. He was born on June 3, 1936, to Merlin and Mary (Simon) Whonsetler. He graduated from Avilla High School Class of 1954, and served in the National Guard. Max was a lifetime area farmer. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla, where he served on the church board of trustees and many other committees throughout the years. In addition to farming, Max was a former Swan Township 4-H leader.
On Aug. 14, 1953, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla, he married Mary VanGorder. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2023.
Survivors include son, Stan (Lana) Whonsetler, of Avilla; daughter, Kathleen (Jeffery) Smith, of Kendallville; grandchildren, Angelia (Deron) Clark, Matthew Whonsetler, Heather Mary Smith and Jeffrey Smith Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Dathan Clark, Davis Clark and Knox Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; daughter, Vicki Martin; grandson, Jeb Smith; and brother, Tom Whonsetler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Harper Funeral Homes, Avilla Chapel, 530 N. Main St., Avilla, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Chris Nelson, of Calvary United Methodist Church, will officiate. Visitation will also be from 4-8 p.m., on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the funeral home. Max will be laid to rest next to his wife at Hooper-King Cemetery, rural Avilla.
