Mary Catherine Lysaght, 92, of South Whitley, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Ascension Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. She was born on September 30, 1933, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Robert and Alice (Conway) Garton. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed being a housewife and caregiver. She was employed by Kansas University as an athletic department secretary and later found joy as librarian at the South Whitley Public Library. Mary was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Columbia City, Indiana. On August 11, 1956, at St. Joseph Cathedral, in St. Joseph, Missouri, she married Robert Daniel Lysaght. Together they shared nearly 57 years of marriage. Robert passed away on August 3, 2013.
Surviving Mary are son, Brian Lysaght and granddaughter Beth; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Joseph Schuhler and grandchildren, Brett, Joel, and Ty; daughter and her significant other, Denice Bruick and Michael Stove and grandchildren, Charles Alan and Erin; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Lysaght and Michael Henze and grandchildren, Chauncy and Courtney; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Lysaght and grandchildren, Nathan and Travis; daughter and her significant other, Rhonda Lysaght and Tony Hicks and grandson, Trey; and son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Angie) Lysaght and grandchildren, Haley and Grayson. Also surviving are 8 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice (Garton) Judd; and brothers, Robert Garton and John Garton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am, Friday, February 6, 2026, at Ascension Sacred Heart Home Chapel, 515 N Main St., Avilla, Indiana. Father Vince Wirtner will celebrate mass. Visitation will be held one hour prior to mass. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband at Green Hill Cemetery, Columbia City, Indiana.
