Jerry L. Hollis, 77, of Albion, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023, in Fort Wayne. Jerry was born on May 7, 1946, to Robert and Mary (Hosler) Hollis Sr. Jerry was a truck driver for Dana Freight.
Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1965. Following stateside training, Hollis deployed to the Vietnam War where he served in Casper Aviation Platoon, 173rd Airborne Brigade as an M-60 door gunner aboard “Huey Choppers.” As a quick reaction force, the 173rd and Hollis followed the action throughout Vietnam’s Central Highlands from Bien Hoa to Pleiku to Kontum to Dak To. Upon completion of his one-year tour of duty, Hollis re-upped for another six-month tour in the Vietnam War, finally returning home in February 1968.
Jerry is survived by his daughters Tracy (Doug) Barcus, of Columbia City, Susan (Barry) Leatherman, of Albion, Dawn (Todd) Shively, of Churubusco, and Carrie (Marcus) Stocksdale, of Albion; brothers Robert (Sharon) Hollis Jr, of Fort Wayne, and Larry (Sherry) Hollis, of Wolcottville; 13 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren; and companion, Retha Hollis of Columbia City.
Preceding Jerry in death, his parents; son, David Hollis; and great grandson Theo Gregory.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am, Friday, December 22, 2023, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 228 N Main St. Avilla, Indiana 46710, with visitation from 9:30 until mass time on Friday. Visitation is also from 2-7pm, Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Harper Funeral Homes, Albion Chapel, 771 Trail Ridge Road, Albion, with a Rosary service to be held at 7:00pm. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avilla.
