Avilla - Grover D. Yontz Jr, 63, of Avilla, passed away on Saturday September 1, 2018 at his home. He was born on April 12, 1955 in Kendallville to the late Grover Yontz Sr and Laura Wiemer. He proudly served his country in the US Army. On March 23, 1973, in Kendallville, he married Sherrie Hamm. Grover was a member of the Carpenters Union Local #232 and was employed as a carpenter specializing in acoustical tile in commercial settings. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #240 Avilla. For over 30 years, he played horse shoes for the Avilla league. His hobbies included anything to do with the outdoors, from hunting to deep sea fishing, gardening, and jobs around the house. He was especially fond of mushroom hunting and was known to take trips to Michigan in search of them. Survivors include his wife, Sherrie Yontz of Avilla, son, Travis (Tracy) Yontz of Kendallville, daughter, Brook (Terry) Ott, of Wolf Lake, grandchildren, Taylan Yontz, Henacie Ott, Falon Ott, Brittany Spencer, Rachel Walters, Austin Starrett, and 6 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Cindy Hill of Kendallville, Sue Barth of Auburn, and Deb Allen of Kendallville; and half siblings, Phillip Wiemer of Kendallville, Joyce Conrad of Davenport, FL, Sherry Paqulico of Colorado Springs, CO, Gerry Yontz of Peroia, AZ, Merry Crager of Pleasant Lake, and Marlou Crisp or Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Sr., and Laura Carver, and a half brother, Terry Yontz. Military Honors will be 1:00pm Saturday Sept 15, 2018 at American Legion Post #240, 205 Ley St., Avilla. A celebration of life gathering will immediately follow at the legion.
