Richard F Buchmeier

GARRETT — Richard F. Buchmeier, 87, of Garrett, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, surrounded by family at Visiting Nurse & Hospice in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Buchmeier was born on June 19, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph A. and Belva (Hixson) Buchmeier. He was raised as a young boy by his grandparents, Forrest and Amanda Hixson. On June 10, 1950, he married Donna J. Shirk in Garrett, Indiana.

Mr. Buchmeier was a farmer and retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne, and in his later years, he enjoyed delivering RV’s around the country. He was a member of Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed reading, traveling (especially to Washington, D.C.), and attending his grandchildren’s events. He was a volunteer at the former McCray Memorial Hospital and then Parkview Noble in Kendallville for many years. He was also a former member of the Air National Guard in Fort Wayne.

He is survived by his four sons, Ron (Cindy) Buchmeier of Nineveh, Indiana, David (Brenda) Buchmeier of Merriam, Indiana, Paul (Sally) Buchmeier of Yorktown, Indiana, and Jim (Sherri) Buchmeier of Auburn, Indiana; and son-in-law Jon (Jean) Wisnieski of Moneta, Virginia. Mr. Buchmeier was very proud of his 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; his daughter, Diane Wisnieski; his sister, Mary Alice Bush; and his half-brothers, Joseph and George Buchmeier.

Visitation for Mr. Buchmeier will be on Thursday, March 29, from 4-8 p.m. at the Harper Funeral Home, Avilla Chapel, 530 North Main Street, Avilla. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. until service time. Pastor Brad Hardesty of Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren will officiate.

Burial will take place in Cedar Creek Cemetery near Garrett.

Preferred memorials may be directed to the Judy A. Morrill Center or Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren.
