Mary Theresa (Helmkamp) Ley

Mary Theresa Ley, 84, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at Presence Sacred Heart Home, Avilla.    Born July 18, 1933, she was the daughter of late Bernard and Hilda Helmkamp.   She was a loving wife, devoted mother and caring grandmother.  On September 3, 1955 she married Donald Ley, who preceded her in death on January 22, 2015.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, where she was church organist for a number of years, and was a member of the Rosary Society.  After retiring from Sacred Heart Home in 1990, she volunteered as school librarian at St. Mary’s School for many years.  She also worked for Snyder Food Service for 18 years.  Mary enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and playing board and card games.  She also was a member of the Avilla American Legion Post #240 Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are children Bill (Chris) Ley, Glenda (Wally) Stevens, Barb (Dave) Thomas, Marty (Darby) Boyd, Joyce (Greg) Haney, Brian (Julie) Ley, Brent (Karna) Ley and Ron (Kathy) Ley; brothers, Gerald, Richard, and Paul Helmkamp; sister Joann (Helmkamp) Alfeld; 30 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James, Donald, and Robert Helmkamp and great-grandson, Asher Ley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am Friday May 4, 2018 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Avilla, with visitation one hour prior.  Father Daniel Chukwuleta will officiate.  Recitation of the Rosary will be 2:00pm Thursday May 3, 2018 at Harper Funeral Homes, Avilla Chapel, 530 N Main St, Avilla.  Visitation will follow the Rosary on Thursday until 8pm at the funeral home.  Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Avilla.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary's name may be directed to St. Mary's School, Alzheimer Association, or Heartland Hospice.  To leave online condolences or sign the guestbook, visit www.harperfuneralhomes.com
